guben, wellness city

The main concern of the proposal is to connect the train station with the centre and to build up a concept of sustainable development.
Traffic infrastructure is reanalysed, in order to strengthening the mobility item and connect the city centre with the west side of Guben.
Also the north-south axes are considered, and a bank near the rails embankment is proposed. This link allows to access several utilities of existent neighbourhoods, but also to manage the train route as a green park, integrating the city, instead of the actual border. In the north side of the station, this axis improves a structural link to north and integrates the regional infrastructure network.
The concept integrates the aims of the city in terms of green, free spaces: the river promenade expands into the north side and various green spaces are raised, interlinked and related with the pedestrian and bicycle paths network. The new park, planned over the train embankment, extends to north, where it links with the riverbank. This public green area is a topographical design that goes up and down in order to create either security boundaries for the rail, manage the bus station roof, the biological food market or to develop several paths and relaxing spaces along its way.
Therefore, the station site presents an all new and attractive arrival point at Guben, with increased accesses to bus and green areas, but also improved with some commercial facilities and seating areas, like cafés and restaurants, in an unused building of German Rail.
Abandoned and empty buildings should be preserved, in order to maintain the cultural city image and its historical statement of a phased and overlapped development. This concept extends to the new buildings proposed, which fill the empty lots of the quarters in order to consolidate and densify the city centre.
Then, existent buildings achieve alternative uses and serve ecological and economical low cost means, while a new social and cultural life is enhanced. Besides of the German Rail building near the train station, also some empty buildings in the north side are reactivated into sport, health and leisure facilities, supporting the green areas nearby, but also the river bank. The former fish factory is rehabilitated into a charm hotel, as well as the empty hangars and industrial buildings around, which may have health and leisure activities.
The empty villa in Berliner Strasse 24 is converted into an educational farm, which serves the younger people of Guben. This concept improves themes of sustainability, ecology and biological agriculture, by promoting workshops and other activities related, in partnership with local schools and the biological food market nearby.
